Richard David PHILLIPPY "Dick" was born 2 Jun 1951 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He died 4 Jan 1969 in Little River Springs, Florida and was buried 8 Jan 1969 in Clearwater, Florida.

DEATH: He was a YMCA certified water safety instructor.  He had lettered on the Clearwater High School swimming team.  He was working on his scuba diving instructor’s certificate.  He was in his first year of college having been accelerated in high school by one year because of advanced work.  He had completed his first term in college with all “A”s.  He was a pre-medical student.  He was working part time at the US Post Office and the YMCA.

DEATH: He was killed in a scuba diving accident in an under water cave at Little River Springs Florida on 4 January 1969 at the age of 18.  The scuba diving accident also cost the life of his older and more experienced diving partner, Mr. Charles Rule, approximately 30 years old.  They had gone together on a scuba diving trip that was scheduled to last several days.  They were both found in the cave by other divers the next day with no air in their tanks.

DEATH: We were contacted by an officer from the sheriff’s office, who came by our home, the day after they were found.  Richard had not yet been missed, as they had not been scheduled to return until the following day.  It was a very great shock for the entire family.  My father was told the news by the sheriff outside the house and he told it to the rest of the family in the house.  After crying for a period with the family, I went on a several mile run around the neighborhood without changing into my running shoes or cloths.

DEATH: He was a good brother and we were very close.  We lived in the same room at our parent’s home in Clearwater Florida.

Richard was cremated and is interred at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park & Funeral Home, 2853 Sunset Point Road, Clearwater, FL  33759.

Hampton WERNER [Parents] [scrapbook] was born 18 Jul 1848 in Maryland. He died 27 Jan 1885. Hampton married Lucinda MILLER on 1876.

Hampton Werner* (1848-1885), son of Johann Caspar Werner* (1809-1878) and Judith Schultz* (1816-1895). Johann Caspar, known as "Caspar" was born in the village of Zeilbach, Hesse Darmstadt, Germany and emigrated to the U.S. in 1834. Hampton's mother, Judith, is descended from a German (Prussian) family whose ancestors lived on a farm along the Vistula River in what is now Poland. Hampton was raised in a farming community with strong ties with the Lutheran Church. He became a high school music teacher and band leader in Garrett County, MD.
Hampton's mother, Judith Shultz* was the last of four children born to Adam Shultz* and Margreta Scheirer*. Margreta died when Judith was still a baby, so Judith was raised by two women; Margreta's mother, and Adam Shultz's second wife, Elizabeth Royer. Adam and Elizabeth had 15 children between them and raised a total of 19 children. Elizabeth lived to be 98 years old.

1860 Census records for German Settlement, Preston County, Virginia, 16th Aug 1860, show Hampton, age 11, living w/ his parents.

Lucinda MILLER [Parents] [scrapbook] was born 10 Mar 1851 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. She died 8 Oct 1939 in Chicago, Illinois. Lucinda married Hampton WERNER on 1876.

Other marriages:
HANSFORD, Wesley D.
LEE, Jesse

BIOGRAPHY: Known to my dad as Grandma Lee, he recalls visiting her, and her living with them for a time.  To him as a child, she always seemed very old!  He recalls her first lengthy car ride taken with his father to visit family in West Virginia.  She had never eaten in a restaurant before that trip.  She had severe arthritis in her hands, and always wore long dresses even after the fashion had changed.  Ultimately, when living with her daughter in Chicago, she tripped over one of her long dresses and fell.  She died shortly thereafter.  JWK

Lucinda Miller* (1851-1939) , daughter of Phineas Miller* (1826-1907), and Mary Fike* (1829-1916) is descended on her father's side from farming families in the Amish/Mennonite traditions in southern central Pennsylvania. On her mother's side, the Fike family is know to have descended from Church of the Brethren farming families, sometime known as "German Baptists" or "River Baptists". Their European origins are German/Swiss or German Protestants who emigrated to America in the mid to early 1700s.

They had the following children:

M i Howard Luke WERNER was born 16 Aug 1882 and died 6 Apr 1954.
F ii Lephia Hope WERNER was born 11 Mar 1877 and died Oct 1975.
M iii Ira Mortimer WERNER was born 8 Apr 1877/1879 and died 10 Aug 1985.
F iv Ida Florence WERNER was born 30 Mar 1881 and died 23 Feb 1930.
  F v
Anna May WERNER was born 24 Feb 1884. She died 14 Jan 1885.

DEATH: died in infancy

Johann Casper WERNER [Parents] [scrapbook] "Casper" was born 3 Feb 1809 in Zeilbach, Ober-Hesse, Germany and immigrated 9 MAY 1834 on Ship" Virginia" out of Bremen into B. He died 12 May 1878 in Eglon, Preston Co., WV and was buried in Eglon Lutheran Church Cemetery, Eglon, WV. Casper married Judith SHULTZ on 1832.

BIOGRAPHY: 9 MAY 1834 on Ship" Virginia" out of Bremen into Baltimore.
J. Caspar came with his cousin Andreas (Andrew) Diehl, son of J. Balthasar. Diehl was spelled Thiel on that record.  Andrew married Matilda Shultz who was a half-sister to Judith Shultz who married Casper Werner.

Judith SHULTZ  [Parents] was born 6 Apr 1818 in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. She died 26 Jul 1895 in Eglon, Preston Co., WV and was buried in Eglon Lutheran Church Cemetery, Eglon, WV. Judith married Johann Casper WERNER on 1832.

BIOGRAPHY: Judith was reared by Eliza Royer.

Note from Gerald L. Reigle, in 1880 Census, Ogden Twp, Lenawee Co., Michigan, Judith is listed as keeping house.  Parents born in Pennsylvania. She is a widow.  Two children living with her, Mary E. Werner, age 22, born Virginia, father born Germany, and Lewis, age 32, born Virginai, father born Germany.

Per Phillips Bradford, Brief Biography of Judith Shultz, http://www.concentric.net/~pvb/GEN/jshul.html:

Judith Shultz, although born in Somerset County PA, grew up on a 1,000 acre farm, acquired by her father, Adam Shultz, near the community of Grantsville, Garrett County MD, where she met her husband, Johann Caspar Werner. After they were married Judith and Caspar bought land and settled in nearby Eglon WV. Eglon is a very small town almost on the border between MD and WV which is surrounded by dairy farms and sawmills in the Appalachian mountains.
Judith received her elementary education in Somerset County PA, while her husband was educated in Zeilbach, Germany as a miller.

Judith Shultz was the last of four children born to Adam Shultz and Margretha Scheirer. Margretha died when Judith was still a baby, so Judith was raised by Margretha's mother, Gertrude (Derr) Scheirer, and Adam Shultz's second wife, Nancy Schockey. Adam and Nancy had 14 children between them and raised a total of 18 children.

Margretha Scheirer is the daughter of Peter Scheirer (1769-1846), and Gertraut Derr. Peter Scheirer is the son of John Scheirer and his wife Elizabetha

Judith's father, Adam Shultz was the son of Jacob Schultz, an immigrant from Germany, whose ancestral family had lived in Switzerland. Once in America, Jacob began to spell his surname "Schultz" as "Shultz" - without the "c". The Schultz family was Lutheran and had moved from farmland along the Vistula River in West Prussia (now Poland) into Poltz (now Paultz) a small Protestant town in Switzerland because of a policy of branding Protestants, and other non-Roman Catholic landowners in West Prussia.

The surname Schultz appears to be Prussian. The name, "Jacob Schultz" appears on lists of branded West Prussian property owners in 1727. The Complete Brandregister of 1727 is a list of landowners who were branded in West Prussia, and it may provide a clue as to this Schultz family history. This Brandregister lists 13 men surnamed Schultz including 3 named Jacob Schultz, one in Gross Mausdorf, one in Marjenau (Marienau), and one in Die Vorhoffsche (Tiegenhoff). Whether any of these are related as ancestors of Jacob Schultz (1750-1803) is difficult to ascertain. In the Mennonite Baptisms in Tiegenhagen, 1782-1800, shows two Jacob Shultz Baptisms: one in 1782 and one in 1788, both in Petershagen.
