Thomas FERNALD [Parents] was born 1633 in Bristol, England. He died 1679. Thomas married Temperance HUNKING on 1658 in Kittery, York, Maine.

He was a ship builder; he owned two islands on the Piscataqua River the larger was named Fernald Island. Today it is a United States navy yard, officially known as the Portsmouth Navy Yard. The yard has a water frontage of nearly three miles, practically all of it with a depth of water ranging from fifty to seventy-five feet at low water, allowing the largest of ships to reach its docks. In 1800 Fernald's Island was purchased by the federal government. It was the scene of considerable activity during the War of 1812, but was of much greater importance during the Civil War, when the famous Kearsarge and several other war vessels were built there. In 1866 the yard was enlarged by connecting Seavey's Island with Fernald's. The cemetery for Thomas and Temperance Fernald still exists on the Island. There is a marker stating that Thomas Fernald (shipwright) and his wife Temperance are both buried there along with their daughter, Elizabeth. Thomas passed ownership of the islands to his sister Sarah and her second husband. See note for Renald Fernald.
Seavey's, Fernald's and other smaller islands were/are variously known as the Lay Claim Islands. Very early in the 1600's the two islands were used as a base for fishing by John Puddington and were called Puddington's Islands. According to a privately printed navy yard book "Cradle of American Shipbuilding" (1979), they were granted to Thomas Fernald in 1645.

Dr. Renald/Reginald Fernald went to Portsmouth, NH about 1631, as the Surgeon of Capt John Mason's Company.
It is tradition that he was a surgeon in the English Navy, resigning his port to come to America. During his life he served as Clerk of Court, Recorder of Deeds, Commissioner and Surveyor and was Town Clerk at the time of his death. He lived on "Doctor's Island" (now Pierce's Island) where he died between May and Oct of 1656. He was buried at Point of Graves Cemetery in Portsmouth. Most of the Fernald descendants remained in the area, residing in Kittery, Maine most all their life. Some moved to nearby New England towns.

My G'Ma Fernald told me that it was spelled many different ways, depending on "how it was heard or written down" by a person. She told me the "correct" spelling for us was Fernald!
