Jason Langdon HUGHES [Parents] [scrapbook] was born 22 Feb 1885 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He died 30 Sep 1940 in St Francis Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA and was buried 3 Oct 1940 in Mt. Royal Cemetary, Glenshaw, PA. Jason married Elanore Ann VIDT.

He died in 1940 in the bathroom of 11 Catherine.  Putting a notch in his belt, he fell and lodged a knife/ ice pick/awl in the side of his head. Per Lynne Johnston.

Per Death Certificate, Jason died at St. Francis Hospital, Pgh. at 8:20 pm on Mon. Sept. 30, 1940.  On Sept. 19, 1940, at 11 Catherine St.,  he suffered a stab wound of skull and brain.  Cause of death was "meningitis due to stab wound of skull and brain.  Suicide."  Buried in Mt. Royal on Oct. 3, 1940.  John N. Vidt, Nora (and Charlotte's) brother, was the informant.  He lived at 11 Vilsack, Etna. His wife was May McClinton (our May in the photo?)

1920 Etna Census, Image 10, shows Jason and family living next door to Alwilda Seavey Hughes at 11 Catherine Street.  He was working as a die setter in the mill.

1930 Etna Census, District 600, Page 3, shows Jason (43) living with Eleanor (41), Wilmina (18), Elmira (14), and Minnie Vidt (69).  Jason was a clerk in a restaurant.

Elanore Ann VIDT [Parents] [scrapbook] "Nora" was born 12 Dec 1887. She died 9 Jan 1976 in California. Nora married Jason Langdon HUGHES.

Ira Carlyle HUGHES [Parents] was born 19 May 1888 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He died 6 Aug 1959 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and was buried in Mt. Royal Cemetary, Glenshaw, PA. Ira married Myrtle C. Zehner BRAUN on 28 Nov 1912 in Pennsylvania.

1920 Etna Census, Image 24, lists Ira (31), Myrtle (29), Braun (16 months), and Edna Louise (6) living at 18 Vilsack Street, Etna. Ira was employed as a machinist in the pipe mill.

1930 Etna Census, District 599, Page 7, lists family still living at 18 Vilsack Street.  Ira is a laborer in a manufacturing plant.

Myrtle C. Zehner BRAUN [Parents] was born 31 May 1890 in Pennsylvania. She died 13 Mar 1985 in Pennsylvania. Myrtle married Ira Carlyle HUGHES on 28 Nov 1912 in Pennsylvania.

BIOGRAPHY: Myrtle and Edna's natural father was Edwin Zehner; but they were both adopted by John A. Braun (their mother's second husband).  Edwin Zehner died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.  Before he killed himself, he had a drunken shooting spree and tried to kill his wife!  So, the family always tried to pretend that Edwin never existed and that John A. William Blair CLANEY was born 16 Jun 1905 in Pennsylvania. He died 19 Sep 1991 in Pennsylvania. William married Living on 10 Aug 1932 in Pennsylvania.

Vern Alexander HUGHES [Parents] [scrapbook] was born 15 Apr 1893 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He died 26 Sep 1961 in Ambridge, Pennsylvania. Vern married Minnie Mathilda Charlotte VIDT on 10 Mar 1915 in Emmanual Evangelical English Lutheran Church, Etna, PA.

Vern worked and played ball for the American Bridge Co. in Ambridge, which I think was far larger than Etna's factories.  He eventually became Superintendent of the Bridge Yard.  He gave up that position because of its intensive demands, and, said family lore, when he did they replaced him with 3 men! My gandfather never lost his job, even in the depths of the Depression, and he helped many family members during those years. Vern played ball most of his life.  I have many clippings relating to his ballplaying career.  Per Lynne Johnston, granddaughter.

Minnie Mathilda Charlotte VIDT [Parents] "Charlotte" was born 9 May 1895 in Pennsylvania. She died 10 Nov 1984 in Pennsylvania. Charlotte married Vern Alexander HUGHES on 10 Mar 1915 in Emmanual Evangelical English Lutheran Church, Etna, PA.

Richard H. LATTER was born 7 Aug 1916. He died 20 Jul 1957. Richard married Eleanore Jane HUGHES on 2 Sep 1939.

Eleanore Jane HUGHES [Parents] [scrapbook] was born 7 Feb 1916 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She died 1 Feb 2001. Eleanore married Richard H. LATTER on 2 Sep 1939.
