1 NOTE BIOGRAPHY: He attended Tri State College in northeastern Indiana.  There 
2 CONC he me Lessie Elizabeth Taylor. Both were taking classes to become 
2 CONC teachers. One of the first dates was spent rowing a boat across the lake 
2 CONC - until it sprung a leak! Both finished the course and taught school.  
2 CONC Later, he attended watchmaking school in Pennsylvania, and took a job in 
2 CONC Baltimore. Lessie was unhappy with life in Baltimore. A store was for 
2 CONC sale in Culver, Indiana, which was nearer where Lessie's family lived. 
2 CONC Ultimately, he purchased the jewelry store where they lived and worked

2 CONC DOB of 1850, rather than the 1833 previously indicated.  Immigration 
2 CONC date:  1865.  Naturalized citizen, date unclear but appears to be 1879.  
2 CONC Able to read and write.  Both parents Irish.

2 CONT I was told by my mother, Doris Hughes Werner, that Grace came over from 
2 CONC Ireland as a companion to a wealthy woman's children.  Query whether this 
2 CONC could have been part of the same McConnell family that the McClain

2 CONT Will of Grace McClain names sons John and Robert as executors.  Personal 
2 CONC estate valued at $4100.  She owned a grocery business at 7146 Hermitage 
2 CONC Street, Pittsburgh, which was run by John and left to him in the will.  
2 CONC She also owned at the time of her will a property known as 7105 Kedron 
2 CONC Avenue, Pittsburgh, Lot # 937 in Homewood Driving Park Plan.  It does not 
2 CONC appear that she owned any real estate at the time of her death.  Each of 
2 CONC the surviving children got 1/6 of the funds in the estate of $447.78.

2 CONT On 30th March 1891, Alonzo applied ofr an "invalid pension", complaining 
2 CONC that he was partially unable to earn a support by manual labor due to 
2 CONC muscular rheumatism and rheumatisn of the joints since 1864, and had lost 
2 CONC 6 months from work over the past two winters.  His physical discription 
2 CONC is as follows:  5 feet 10 inches, fair complexion, grey eyes, brown hair. 
2 CONC (In a 1907 update of his pension, he described himself as 5 feet 8 
2 CONC inches, 190 pounds, blue eyes, gray hair, light complexion, with a scar 
2 CONC on his upper lip.) He moved from Etna in 1867 to Alliance, Ohio, where he 
2 CONC remained until 1873, when he returned to Etna.  George A. Seavey, Harry 
2 CONC W. Evans,William Weiher, and George Gregory signed affidavits in support 
2 CONC of his application.

2 CONT Per Death Certificate:  Alonzo died of valvular heart disease with 
2 CONC dilitation of the heart/ contributory cardiac asthma.  He was confined in 
2 CONC bed from Feb. 28 to his death on Mar. 13, 1914.

2 CONT In 1880, census lists William and Maria lived at 102 Locust St, next door 
2 CONC to Alonzo and Harriet Hughes.  William Hughes, age 70, and Maria A., age 
2 CONC 68, are listed in the June 1880 Census for Etna Borough (Image 11).  They 
2 CONC resided at 102 Locust Street, Etna, right next door to their son, Alonzo 
2 CONC Hughes and Elwilda Seavey Hughes. William indicates he was born in 
2 CONC England, Maria was born in Wales. Williams father was born in Wales, his 
2 CONC mother in England.  Maria's parents were both born in England. Orthelias 
2 CONC (28, heater in rolling mill) resided with them.

2 CONC Lurretta Seavey Hughes., b.1845 d. Jan 13, 1928 was my ggrandmother. I

2 CONC dates don't fit. Her family tree included WM. Lee m. Jane Kidd whose son 
2 CONC was Joseph Lee. The children of Joseph and Harriet appear to be Alwilda, 
2 CONC Lucinda A. m. John G. Williams, Charlie?, Josiah. Ida B. (Kinch), Will?. 
2 CONC and Josephine L. (Josie), b.1856 d. Jan 14, 1882. On Mar. 14, 1866, 
2 CONC Alwilda m. Alonza M. Hughes, b.Apr. 17, 1845 d. Mar. 13, 1914. They had 
2 CONC 10 surviving children; the youngest, LaVerne (Vern) Hughes of Ambridge 
2 CONC was my grandfather. I have Alwilda's diary which mentions many Etna

2 CONC mother and she married a man named Jason Langdon Seavey who was born in 
2 CONC Maine but had moved to Etna Pa. in the mid 1850's.I have no other clues

2 CONT Mr. J. L. Seavey occured yesterday morning at 11 o'clockat the home of 
2 CONC his
2 CONT son-in-law Mr. W. T. Richards on Lincoln avenue. His death was not
2 CONT unexpected as he had been fast failing for the past three days. It is
2 CONT mourned wspecially by his sons W. L. and J. L. SEavey Jr. and daughter 
2 CONC Mrs
2 CONT Richards, who were present at the time and other members of the family. 
2 CONC Mr.
2 CONT Seavey brought his family to this city in 1891 and has lived here ever
2 CONT since. He worked at the Colorado Midland shops as carpenter for five 
2 CONC years
2 CONT and then his health broke down and he has been very poorly during the
2 CONT remaining three years. He was very well known to all in this city and his
2 CONT death is deeply felt by all. The funeral will take place tomorrow at the
2 CONT Methodist church. Rev. L.C. Powell will conduct the service.

2 CONT BURIAL: Jason died on the 21st of 
2 CONT january 1899 and I went through the pages of the Colorado Springs Gazette 
2 CONT which was and still is the daily paper here. His burial plot was 
2 CONC purchased 
2 CONT by his son J. H. Seavey on the 20th of Jan. as a single lot(Fairview 
2 CONC Cemetery, Colorado Springs), and he was 
2 CONT buried under the name of Mr. Seavy, (not Seavey), and there was never a 
2 CONT headstone as far as any one knows nor any indication that one could have 
2 CONT fallen or broken. When I found a Mrs H.L.Seavey buried in Pueblo I 
2 CONC thought 
2 CONT this was an error and the clerk explained tha the initials stood for 
2 CONC Harriet 
2 CONT Lee, and she is buried with Josiah, and William L. and other Seaveys.

2 CONC about 1980 and lived there at least 22 years.

1 NOTE Hampton Werner* (1848-1885), son of Johann Caspar Werner* (1809-1878) and 
2 CONC Judith Schultz* (1816-1895). Johann Caspar, known as "Caspar" was born in 
2 CONC the village of Zeilbach, Hesse Darmstadt, Germany and emigrated to the 
2 CONC U.S. in 1834. Hampton's mother, Judith, is descended from a German 
2 CONC (Prussian) family whose ancestors lived on a farm along the Vistula River 
2 CONC in what is now Poland. Hampton was raised in a farming community with 
2 CONC strong ties with the Lutheran Church. He became a high school music 
2 CONC teacher and band leader in Garrett County, MD.
2 CONT Hampton's mother, Judith Shultz* was the last of four children born to 
2 CONC Adam Shultz* and Margreta Scheirer*. Margreta died when Judith was still 
2 CONC a baby, so Judith was raised by two women; Margreta's mother, and Adam 
2 CONC Shultz's second wife, Elizabeth Royer. Adam and Elizabeth had 15 children 
2 CONC between them and raised a total of 19 children. Elizabeth lived to be 98 
2 CONC years old.

1 NOTE BIOGRAPHY: Known to my dad as Grandma Lee, he recalls visiting her, and 
2 CONC her living with them for a time.  To him as a child, she always seemed 
2 CONC very old!  He recalls her first lengthy car ride taken with his father to 
2 CONC visit family in West Virginia.  She had never eaten in a restaurant 
2 CONC before that trip.  She had severe arthritis in her hands, and always wore 
2 CONC long dresses even after the fashion had changed.  Ultimately, when living 
2 CONC with her daughter in Chicago, she tripped over one of her long dresses 
2 CONC and fell.  She died shortly thereafter.  JWK

2 CONT Lucinda Miller* (1851-1939) , daughter of Phineas Miller* (1826-1907), 
2 CONC and Mary Fike* (1829-1916) is descended on her father's side from farming 
2 CONC families in the Amish/Mennonite traditions in southern central 
2 CONC Pennsylvania. On her mother's side, the Fike family is know to have 
2 CONC descended from Church of the Brethren farming families, sometime known as 
2 CONC "German Baptists" or "River Baptists". Their European origins are 
2 CONC German/Swiss or German Protestants who emigrated to America in the mid to 
2 CONC early 1700s.

1 NOTE Ida Florence Werner* grew up in the farm community of Eglon WV where she 
2 CONC met her future husband, Harry, when he was on a summer vacation in 
2 CONC western MD, near the WV border. Eglon is a very small town almost on the 
2 CONC border between MD and WV which is surrounded by dairy farms and sawmills 
2 CONC in the Appalachian mountains. She was the third of five children in her 
2 CONC family and had received some training in singing from her father, who was 
2 CONC a music teacher. She and Harry were married in 1903 in Washington DC and 
2 CONC she raised their two sons.
2 CONT Ida was known for her long and radiant red hair. She was a wonderful 
2 CONC hostess and played the piano for many country sing-fests, as well as for 
2 CONC her family and friends in Washington DC.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Ida died suddenly in 1930 of what was diagnosed as "rheumatic heart", 
2 CONC accompanied however with hemorrhaging of the lungs. It is suspected now 
2 CONC that she had contracted tuberculosis, which was complicated by a chronic 
2 CONC condition, such as asthma.

1 NOTE DEATH: He was a YMCA certified water safety instructor.  He had lettered 
2 CONC on the Clearwater High School swimming team.  He was working on his scuba 
2 CONC diving instructor’s certificate.  He was in his first year of college 
2 CONC having been accelerated in high school by one year because of advanced 
2 CONC work.  He had completed his first term in college with all “A”s.  He was 
2 CONC a pre-medical student.  He was working part time at the US Post Office 
2 CONC and the YMCA.
2 CONT 
2 CONT DEATH: He was killed in a scuba diving accident in an under water cave at 
2 CONC Little River Springs Florida on 4 January 1969 at the age of 18.  The 
2 CONC scuba diving accident also cost the life of his older and more 
2 CONC experienced diving partner, Mr. Charles Rule, approximately 30 years old. 
2 CONC  They had gone together on a scuba diving trip that was scheduled to last 
2 CONC several days.  They were both found in the cave by other divers the next 
2 CONC day with no air in their tanks.
2 CONT 
2 CONT DEATH: We were contacted by an officer from the sheriff’s office, who 
2 CONC came by our home, the day after they were found.  Richard had not yet 
2 CONC been missed, as they had not been scheduled to return until the following 
2 CONC day.  It was a very great shock for the entire family.  My father was 
2 CONC told the news by the sheriff outside the house and he told it to the rest 
2 CONC of the family in the house.  After crying for a period with the family, I 
2 CONC went on a several mile run around the neighborhood without changing into 
2 CONC my running shoes or cloths.
2 CONT 
2 CONT DEATH: He was a good brother and we were very close.  We lived in the 
2 CONC same room at our parent’s home in Clearwater Florida.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Richard was cremated and is interred at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park & 
2 CONC Funeral Home, 2853 Sunset Point Road, Clearwater, FL  33759.

1 NOTE BIOGRAPHY: In my memory, "Uncle" Bob was a wizen old gentlemen who lived 
2 CONC with his brother John on a property behind my grandparents (Earl & Grace 
2 CONC Hughes) home at 114 Woodland Road, Glenshaw, PA.  Grace was their sister. 
2 CONC  They seemed to me to be virtual hermits, as they did not attend the 
2 CONC family functions which were regularly held at my grandparents, nor were 
2 CONC either able to drive.  I heard stories of a dispute with my grandfather 
2 CONC which caused a problem between them and my branch of the family, but was 
2 CONC never told details.  I recall a somewhat morbid fascination with them and 
2 CONC the rundown property where they lived. No doubt all of the kids were 
2 CONC scared of them and were afraid to venture on the property.  My mother use 
2 CONC to tell stories of the days when her Uncle Bob owned a candy store. After 
2 CONC the death of the brothers, the property was sold and a church presently

2 CONC residing with sons Robert, age 29, and John at 7103 Rednor Street. Robert 
2 CONC is listed as a manufacturer of candies.  This would again indicate a 
2 CONC birthdate for Robert of 1880.

2 CONT 1920 Census Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, PA, Image 15, lists Robert 
2 CONC residing with Grace McClain at 7307 Monticello Street, Pittsburgh.  His 
2 CONC age is listd as 40, occupation propriator of a confectionary store. 
2 CONC Accepting this age as correct, his date of birth would appear to be 1880 
2 CONC instead of 1873. However, in the Bible, which I believe my mother 
2 CONC inherited when the brother's died in 1965, lists the dates of birth of 
2 CONC all the children.  The entry appears old and lists Robert dob as 3 Feb 
2 CONC 1873. Both parents, (Robert and Grace) are listed as from Ireland.
